Planning Port Calls

Plan personnel and equipment needed to operate a port call with SmartTerminal. Close integration with Shiplog™ means that updated voyage information from ship owners is available at any time and actual berthing times are recorded using AIS information from either Shiplog™ or SafeSeaNet™.

Manual or EDI-based registration of cargo missions

SmartTerminal has been integrated with most shipping companies and the system can both send and receive standard EDI and XML messages. Ship-owners can be notified automatically about goods moving in/out of the terminal, as well as load / unload times from a ship. SmartTerminal also has its own customer portal where the customer can follow all activities concerning their cargo in real time.

Registration of cargo loading/unloading activities

SmartTerminal automatically connects cargo information from the work order with pre-defined locations on the terminal, which means the stacker-operator can immediately see via their mobile devices (iPad or PC) where the goods are to be placed or retrieved from.

The work order includes information about dangerous goods as well as any temperature requirements for the cargo. The system also records and logs the exact time the activity for precise traceability.

Work Orders

Work orders can be issued for all types of activities. These can be controlled and assigned by the logistics center and associated with calls, storage fees or separate invoicing. Registration can also be done from handheld devices at the terminal.

General Cargo & Roll on / Roll off

SmartTerminal has built-in modules for “stuffing” and “stripping” of cargo, integration with carriers and automated generation of cargo lists for customers. The system tracks where the goods are positioned on the terminal as well as actual and planned locations for Roll on / Roll off units.

Activity-based Invoicing

Contracts are defined in flexible matrices and all standard activities related to port calls are automatically invoiced. Invoicing may be distributed so that some activities are invoiced to the ship owner, others to the container owner, etc.

Carrier Portal

SmartTerminal has a dedicated web portal for transport companies serving the terminal, which allows the portal carrier to self-enroll goods to be collected or delivered at the terminal.

Integration with automated gate systems – ISPS harbor

When a vehicle arrives at the terminal, the gate system will automatically scan and OCR the vehicle registration number, booking number and container number. SmartTerminal connects transport information from the gate systems with TOS data. Once the information has been synchronized, the gates opens automatically and the driver is instructed where to go for loading/unloading. The stacker operator is informed simultaneously of the transport and can thus prepare for it.

This automation significantly reduces the turnaround time for transport vehicles and reduces emissions by decreasing time spent idling of transport vehicles.

Photos taken of vehicle and cargo by the gate are stored in the system for future reference and can be used for documenting damage to the load carrier, for example.

Depot / Warehouse

SmartTerminal automatically calculates the rental fee for depot and warehousing as well as incorporating flexible matrices for customer contracts to ensure that rent charged is based on the latest price parameters.

Damage Control Module

SmartTerminal has its own module for registration and tracking of damage to cargo and load carriers.

The module incorporates drawings of the most common types of goods and functionality to both highlight and mark the location of different types of damage. Photos of the damage can be taken from an iPad and inserted directly into the damage report. The damage report is also linked to the cargo / carrier unit so if the unit is shipped out and returns to the harbour, the system will create automatic notifications about previous damage to avoid double registration.

Handling of hazardous goods

Dangerous goods are separated into classes and have their own designated areas within the terminal in accordance with regulation. Placement is determined by the system during loading / unloading.

A disaster report containing information on all dangerous goods stored at the terminal, such as location and amounts, can be generated at any time. Area maps can be attached to the report which can then be sent automatically to predefined addresses, e.g. fire departments, management, HSE manager etc.

SmartTerminal has excellent help and support.

All our applications use JIRA Service Desk by Atlassian to ensure our customers have the very best help available.

Temperature control

Locations equipped with electrical connectivity are predefined in the system. When a unit with requirement for electrical connectivity arrives, SmartTerminal will automatically create a work order to connect the device to power. The system also has a registration page where the terminal operator can record routine controls of temperatures.

KPI Reporting

SmartTerminal has a wide range of standard reports, such as reporting to Statistics Norway and Customs Authorities. Other KPI reports such as statistics on calls, efficiency at the docking and loading / unloading etc. are also available. All built-in reports can be exported to Excel or PDF format, and the system can easily be extended with other customer-specific reports if required.

Software as a Service

SmartTerminal has been developed as a web application and is software delivered as a Service (SaaS). The solution runs on Windows Azure, a market leading cloud platform from Microsoft.  As a customer, choosing a cloud-based solution eliminates the need for any local servers or software installation; The entire system runs through a standard web browser.  Server capacity can easily be scaled up or down based on usage patters and data volume as required and all operational routines such as system backups, version upgrades etc. are handled by your provider so you can focus on your business.
